Diabetes and your eyes: check the retina every year
People with diabetes should have an eye check at least once a year, even when they see well.

High blood sugar over many years damages the small blood vessels of the retina. This is called diabetic retinopathy.
- Control blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol
- Take medicines as prescribed
- Have a dilated eye examination once a year
- See a doctor at once for sudden blurred vision or many floaters
